Congressman Armstrong spoke on the House floor today in support of Savanna’s Act (H.R. 2733), a bipartisan, bicameral bill to develop protocols to address missing and murdered Native Americans.

Savanna’s Act is named in honor of Savanna LaFontaine-Greywind, a 22-year-old pregnant member of the Spirit Lake Tribe who was murdered in 2017.

Congressman Armstrong highlighted the staggering statistics of crime against Native Americans, women and girls in particular:

  • On some reservations, Indian women are murdered at more than 10 times the national average.
  • Native Americans are 2 ½ times as likely to experience violent crimes and 2 times more likely to experience rape or sexual assault crimes.
  • More than 4 in 5 Native American women have experienced violence in their lifetime.
